Why race a Solar Car?

  • To promote the College

  • To demonstrate and develop environmentally-friendly alternative energy

  • To develop interest in science and engineering

  • For an exceptional learning opportunity

Red River College's solar-powered vehicle will compete in the 2008 North American Solar Challenge.  Top universities from across North America will be competing in this exciting event.  The race starts in Houston, Texas and travels north to Winnipeg, then turns west and continues on to Calgary, a total distance of 4000 kilometers in 11 days.  Varied climates, topology and road conditions make this race an incredible test of engineering, manufacturing, planning, maintenance and endurance.

Students will have an unparalleled opportunity to participate in a large-scale multi-disciplined research project - a project with real planning, budget, design, manufacture, repair, resource and time constraints.
