HOW TO OPEN MICROSOFT WORD FROM YOUR WINDOWS ‘95 DESKTOP

1. Put your hand lightly on top of the Mouse beside the computer. Make sure the buttons on the mouse are facing the screen.

2. With the mouse put the pointer on the Start button and press once or click on the Start button with the left mouse button.

3. After you have clicked on Start, a menu will pop up. This is called a pop-up menu. Move your mouse pointer up and down the menu. You will see a band of dark blue (highlight bar) when you stop or pause on an icon item. With the highlight bar, you will tell the computer which item you would like to choose. Move the mouse pointer to the item called Programs. Notice that there is an arrow on the right side of Programs and some other items. These arrows show that if you choose this item, another menu with more choices will be displayed.

4. With the Programs menu you can access all of the programs on the computer. Move the highlight bar to the Programs menu with the mouse. In the second pop-up menu, move the highlight bar to Microsoft Word. Left click once on Microsoft Word. You will see a small screen inside the desktop labeled Microsoft Word. This label of white printing on a blue background is called the Title Bar. You have now opened the program, Microsoft Word.

HOW TO USE THE MENU & TOOL BARS IN MICROSOFT WORD

1. Under the Title bar, you will see the Menu bar. Review the menus of each of the items below by pointing to and left clicking on an item. Start with the File menu on the far left of the Menu bar. Keep your finger on the left mouse button and move the mouse to the right to view all of the menus. If a menu remains on your screen and you would like to take it off, just click outside of it. If you click inside a menu, a command will be executed.

2. Under the Menu bar you can see the Tool bar. The Tool bar is made up of picture buttons. They represent commands or features that can also be found somewhere on the Menu bar. But, the buttons on the Tool bar are there to make your life easier. They are more accessible than having to go into the Menu bar. Some programs may have more than one tool bar. If you can’t see the tool bars for some reason, you can find them in the View menu in the Menu bar. Tool bars can be made visible or invisible.

If you point to one of the icons in the Tool bar, a yellow box will appear with a one or two-word description of that particular item. Start on the far left of the Tool bar on the "new document" icon. Move your mouse across the Tool bar to see what the functions of the various icons are. You will be using some of these tools today.
