[Campus Text Alerting System]

Red River College has partnered with MTS mobility to notify staff and students of potential threats to safety and security on campus.

The Campus Alerting System is designed to send a time-stamped SMS Text message to registered staff and students in case of an immediate threat to health and safety, a lockdown, or to inform recipients of a campus closure. The System will not be used for advertising or general announcements .

The Campus Alerting System is open to all full and part-time students and staff at Red River College. Registration is strictly voluntary. Registration is also free to subscribers and there is no cost to receive any Campus Alerts. Participants must have a valid student or staff card to register and must be an MTS mobility subscriber. Only one mobile number may be entered per person.

Participants can also indicate which campus they attend to ensure they receive any potential alerts for that campus.

The Campus Alerting System is just one part of Red River Colleges Emergency Notification Procedures and an integral part of the public safety system at RRC. Our united goal is to enhance the safety and security of all students, staff and visitors to the College.  To sign up for this service, click here.

[Phasing out TLM in 2010]

The college will be moving to a new Learning Management System(LMS) in the new year call LEARN short for Desire 2 Learn.  TLM courses will be fully migrated over to LEARN by the summer of 2010 in order to provide a consistent platform across the college.  Why is the college moving away from TLM?  An LMS review task group recommended the product called Desire2Learn as the best available product on the market for college wide use and for uniformity purposes we will be switching over as well. TLM migration issues and training requests should go to Stephen Yurkiw.

[Inappropriate Use Reminder:] College laptops are solely for academic purposes, if you are experiencing problems due to inappropriate use such as downloading peer-to-peer file sharing programs, music, videos, games or any other programs that are not part of your curriculum, you should remove the application immediately.  College helpdesk DO NOT support laptop problems incurred by improper usage from students.

If your laptop is experiencing a lack of performance, has popups or responding erratically, chances are you been infected by some form of Spyware.  They are the number one cause of computer problems and they can download and install programs unbidden by the computer user; it can change browser settings, reset bookmarks, hijack your web browser and generally take over the smooth operating of your computer.

Very often Spyware comes included in bundled shareware or other downloadable pieces of software including torrents, music tracks, videos, games, auto complete etc.  Spyware conceals itself deep on the hard disk drive, never making its presence felt until it drains all the computer resources and begin to impact the normal operation of your computer.  Adware on the other hand, whilst it is downloaded in a similar way to Spyware, makes no attempt to hide its presence. Having begun to gather intelligence about the computer user it will be used to present all manner of advertising banners and popups, usually at the most inappropriate times and with annoying persistence.

All laptops with inappropriate programs installed will be removed when found during service from College help desks.  Repetitive occurrences will result in limited privileges on user account which will disable the ability for user to install any programs.
