[Volunteer Experience Rendez-vous Canada]

May 8-12, 2010

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Rendez-vous Canada (RVC) is Canada’s premier annual international tourism industry marketplace.  Every year, in a different Canadian destination, Rendezvous Canada brings selected international buyers together with invited travel media and Canadian tourism industry suppliers.

WHY WE NEED YOU!

Winnipeg has been chosen as the host city for Rendez-vous Canada 2010, which is being held May 8-12, 2010.

To ensure the delegates experience a warm, exciting, and inviting environment we need your help.  The warmth and diversity of the people in Manitoba is the theme for 2010 and we hope to achieve this by working with 100-150 Manitoba Ambassadors who will act as our city and provincial hosts during this international marketplace.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

There are seven different ways in which you can make a difference in making this marketplace into an awesome experience for the delegate.

3. Transportation Host

-Helping the delegates board their shuttle, communicate where the shuttle stops are, and or help the delegates find alternate transportation.

4. Way-finding Host

-Stationed at the hotels and the Convention Centre to walk delegates to and from their hotels, Convention Centre, Restaurants etc.

5. Manitoba Night Host May 10

-This group is the welcome committee.  Welcoming the delegates to dinner, dining  with them and acting as their Manitoba expert.

6. Back Stage Hosts

-Assigned to one of the acts on Manitoba Night to ensure that they are at their curtain call on time.

7. Go Getters

-On hand if there are any errands that need to be run.

The Hospitality Department is planning to have a booth at the Share Our Strength (S.O.S.) Taste the Nation event, on Monday, April 12 at the Fairmont Hotel.

We would like to showcase our Hospitality & Tourism and Hotel & Restaurant Management programs.  We can have a maximum of three students at the booth at any time, but there are other opportunities to volunteer as greeters and bussers. We would rotate students at the booth throughout the evening.

S.O.S holds two major fundraisers each year, a Chef’s Dinner and the Taste the Nation event.  One hundred percent of money raised from ticket sales is donated.  Their philosophy is “No Kid Hungry”.  If you would like to read more about S.O.S., go to  http://strength.org/winnipeg/

There may be some preparation required prior to April 12 and you would be needed from approximately 4pm to 10 pm, the evening of the event.  These are only estimates at this point however.

If you would like to volunteer or if you have any questions, please contact me.

[Inappropriate Use Reminder:] College laptops are solely for academic purposes, if you are experiencing problems due to inappropriate use such as downloading peer-to-peer file sharing programs, music, videos, games or any other programs that are not part of your curriculum, you should remove the application immediately.  College helpdesk DO NOT support laptop problems incurred by improper usage from students.

If your laptop is experiencing a lack of performance, has popups or responding erratically, chances are you been infected by some form of Spyware.  They are the number one cause of computer problems and they can download and install programs unbidden by the computer user; it can change browser settings, reset bookmarks, hijack your web browser and generally take over the smooth operating of your computer.

Very often Spyware comes included in bundled shareware or other downloadable pieces of software including torrents, music tracks, videos, games, auto complete etc.  Spyware conceals itself deep on the hard disk drive, never making its presence felt until it drains all the computer resources and begin to impact the normal operation of your computer.  Adware on the other hand, whilst it is downloaded in a similar way to Spyware, makes no attempt to hide its presence. Having begun to gather intelligence about the computer user it will be used to present all manner of advertising banners and popups, usually at the most inappropriate times and with annoying persistence.

All laptops with inappropriate programs installed will be removed when found during service from College help desks.  Repetitive occurrences will result in limited privileges on user account which will disable the ability for user to install any programs.
