[Timetable Correction]
Several Hospitality Department students have commented that they are able to see their winter semester timetables on Web Advisor. Some have indicated they have received them by mail. Please note that this is a programming error. The schedules you have seen and/or received are NOT the final version of the winter timetable – they may still change before they are finalized. Please do not make plans based on these documents. The final versions of your winter timetables will appear on this web site in December.

[Red River College - H1N1 Influenza Update - September 18, 2009]
Notes from Dr. Joel Ketner Presentation
Chief Provincial Public Health Officer
·Flu expected to be relatively mild.
·Important to plan for unknowns and possible increase in severity.
·Flu gets into the bloodstream and that is why a person gets fever and muscle pain
(as opposed to just affecting the mucus membranes as in a cold).
·The Flu hits suddenly.
·With H1N1 you have a fever AND a Cough, plus one of the other listed symptoms.
·The Virus CAN result in Viral Pneumonia in some people.
·If you get the Flu, ask yourself “Am I in a high risk category?” (aboriginal, obese, diabetic, smoker, etc) If yes then go and see doctor. You will likely receive an anti-viral drug to ease symptoms.
·If not in a high risk group you will be told to watch your health closely. If you get worse, have trouble breathing or are short of breath, you may have developed Viral Pneumonia.
·Delays in recognizing pneumonia may have been what lead to previous H1N1 deaths in Manitoba.
·The issue is HOW your body will respond to the virus as opposed to WHO you might get it from.
·No teachers or Healthcare workers dies or were seriously sick during the first wave.
·Biggest impact was felt in First Nations….both in isolated communities (rural) and in Winnipeg (urban).
.Impact was up to 24 times higher in FN communities.
·Province is expecting to have updated guidelines for all sectors released by next week.
Workplace:
·Everyone should have 2 people who can fill in for each other. (i.e. “flu-friends” or “bug-buddies”)
Vaccine:
·H1N1 Vaccine contains the H1N1 virus which was rendered inactive.
·Vaccine contains 3 antigens to boost its effectiveness.
o Shark oil
o Vitamin E
o A Polysaccharide
If you get the Flu, STAY HOME. You don’t need to see a doctor, BUT if you get short of breath or have breathing problems immediately contact your physician.
There will be 2 flu shots this season
·Seasonal Flu shot (coming soon)
·Pandemic Flu shot (expected in November)
The following information has been prepared to update Red River College staff and students
with information on RRC’s Pandemic Influenza preparations, as well as to provide details
about influenza and steps each person can take to protect themselves and help prevent the
spread of the virus.
Pandemic Planning began at RRC in the spring with the first outbreak of the H1N1 virus. A
new Pandemic Influenza Plan was approved in June and is part of the College's Emergency
Response Plan. A copy of the plan will be posted on the RRC website shortly.
Please regularly check the RRC website for information and updates. In addition, new material
