Staff

All of the program's paid staff is currently students at the three involved institutions. Using competent young people to staff the program has many advantages. Participants relate well to the young university/college students who serve as role models. It provides future professionals (the students) with valuable learning experience and perhaps more importantly, sensitizes them to the unique needs of each group. All staff is hired based on their ability to relate with young people and their competence with subject material.

All staff has completed a two day training course and must have a valid certificate in basic C.P.R. All staff has been screened through a criminal records check and the Manitoba Child Abuse Registry.

Career Trek's long-term goal is to have its entire staff complement made up of graduates of the program. This serves a dual purpose. First, the staff is recognized as success stories for having made it to post-secondary studies, which continues to reinforce and strengthen their self-esteem. Just as importantly, young participants work with staff that is "just like them". This helps the participants recognize that aspiring to a post-secondary education is a real and achievable goal. 2005-2006 program year, 48% of Career Trek's staff were alumni of the program.
